Spaying and Neutering What You Should Know

Spaying or neutering your dog is something you should consider doing soon after bringing your puppy or dog home. There are few, if any drawbacks and lots of positives for spaying or neutering.

Before getting into that though, it?s important to understand what each term means.

  • Spaying: The process of surgically removing the females? reproductive organs. This is the same thing as a woman getting a hysterectomy.

  • Neutering:The process of surgically removing the males? reproductive organs?his testicles.

Now that we have that out of the way, onto the advantages of spaying and neutering:

  • Your dog will have less aggression towards other dogs. This doesn?t mean they turn into a docile peace and love animal. If they were aggressive before the surgery they will still be after, but one of the major causes for aggression (having balls) will have been removed.

  • Your dog won?t want to roam as much. This is particularly true of the male dog. When they have testicles, they are constantly sniffing for a mate. When they smell a female in esterous, they will travel almost any distance to consummate. Don?t think females are all pure though, they will also make themselves as available as possible.

  • Studies show that males have much less chances of prostate problems later in life if they have been neutered. Both sexes will be healthier without their reproductive organs. Giving birth is never without risk. Obviously cancers associated with the reproductive organs will be avoided.

  • By spaying or neutering you are helping to reduce the huge problem of dog overpopulation. 3 to 4 million pets are euthanized every year, and that?s only counting those documented.

  • Spaying eliminates the females heat cycle which usually lasts up to 12 days. That cycle usually occurs twice a year so you have to deal with it for nearly one month out of the year. Believe me it?s not easy keeping those males away from your female for that long. The mess is also not fun to deal with?need I say more?

  • Spaying and neutering avoids temperament swings particularly during a cycle. This reminds me of one of my personal experiences with one of my Labradors. I knew I was going to ?fix? her but I was under the false impression that I should let her go through one cycle first. I loved that dog with all my heart and soul but for those 12 days, I couldn?t stand her?she was mean, perverted, and totally one track minded. In other words she was a completely different dog.

Okay now for the disadvantages to spaying and neutering:

Umm, well lets see?Oh yeah it costs money to have the surgery. Actually there are tons of centers that will do the job very inexpensively; ask your vet for a list.

Spaying and neutering is an important thing to consider when you bring a new puppy or dog into your life. There are only advantages for doing so.
