Potty Training a Puppy

Potty training is easiest when your dog is still a young puppy. Adult dogs that are not yet housetrained are not spoiled, but they do have some undesirable habits they need to unlearn. So be sure to start training your puppy as soon as possible.

Bear in mind that potty training is going to take patience, no matter whether your dog is still a puppy or an old senior.

The primary key to successfully potty train your puppy is the correct timing. A young puppy is not able to control his muscle over a long time, so they need to go pee or poo inside a timeframe of 15-20 minutes after drinking or eating. Your job is to take the puppy outside within this timeframe.

Take him outside whenever?

  • he wakes up in the morning
  • he whimpers
  • he has eaten or drank something
  • you played with him
  • it is time to go to bed
  • he took a nap

When he goes pee or poo where you want him to, praise him a lot. If there happen to be an accident, don?t punish your puppy. Ignore your puppy while quietly cleaning up the mess.

Be sure to clean up the mess completely, as the smell of urine will encourage your puppy to pee again on that spot. A carpet-cleaning machine can be quite handy while training a puppy.

Always assume that whining or whimpering means the puppy has to pee or poo. Take him out instantly to avoid a mess.

You should also be aware of a fact that could affect the training:

What food is your dog eating? Food high in fiber or sugar can increase the volume your dog defecates. Food with a high amount of waste in it will result in your dog getting rid of this waste. If in doubt about the quality of your food, talk to your vet. He is able to recommend you a high quality dog food.

Tips

  • Potty training your puppy is not always a fun thing to do. However, please do not surrender. It is an absolute essential thing every puppy needs to learn. You do not want a grown dog messing every inch of your house.
  • Dogs want to please. Always praise him for good behavior. Any form of physical punishment is counterproductive.
  • Do not take your dog back into the house the second he relieved himself. If you go back home, your puppy will notice that the fun will end once he go potty. As a result, he will delay relieving himself the next time you go.

Be patient and persistent and you will be successful in potty training your puppy.
