How Can I Get Rid Of Fleas On My Dog

by Kimberly Talbot

Whether you have only found one flea on your dog, or hundreds, the same health risks are threatening your dogs either way. Fleas are carriers of tapeworm, and commonly pass the tapeworms on to our pets with just one bite. Along with the tapeworms, they can cause anemia, dehydration, hot spots and constant skin irritations to our pets. The following are steps that you can take to completely rid your loving pets of fleas effectively and permanently.

  1. You will need to bathe your dog with a flea shampoo. If your dog has sensitive skin or has hot spots due to the irritation the fleas have caused on their skin, you should consider using a flea shampoo that is soothing to the skin, such as an oatmeal-based shampoo. Don?t blow-dry your dog after this step as this may cause more irritation to the skin. Let your dogs coat air-dry.
  1. After your dog?s coat is completely dry use a flea dip to kill the fleas that are on the dogs skin. A flea dip typically comes in a concentrated form, so it?s very important that you read the dilution instructions completely. After diluting the flea dip, use a sponge to saturate your dog?s coat completely from the skin out. Rub the dip in starting at the back of the ears, where fleas like to hide, to the tip of the tail, where the fleas also like to hide. Be sure to rub the flea dip on the belly and legs as well. Now that your dog is saturated from the head to the tail, let them air dry. If you rub them dry with a towel you will be rubbing off the dip that you just applied.
  1. While your dog is drying from the dip, strip the doggy bed, if your dog has one, and wash it in warm soapy water. If the bed has an inner liner that is not washable, cover it completely with a flea spray and let air dry, preferably outside. After the flea spray on the doggy bed is completely dry, put the washed bed cover back on and cover with a flea powder.
  1. Now you should consider a flea treatment to help keep the fleas away. You may want to choose a flea collar if your dog is 20lbs. Or less. A flea collar is not effective on dogs that weigh more than 20lbs. If your dog is a larger dog, you may want to consider a topical treatment such as Advantage, K9 Advantix, Frontline, or other brand of topical treatments.
Now that you have completely rid your dog of fleas, you should treat the outside and inside of your home for fleas to prevent the problem from coming back and becoming increasingly worse.
