Dog training can really be a lot of fun for you and your dog. To begin just tell yourself you're going to have a great time and convey this feeling to your "best friend." You might want to talk with other owners whose dogs are well behaved and ask for some tips and tricks to use. You might also talk to other dog owners who are struggling to get their dogs to behave properly. House training can take as long as several months, but it is much better to house train right the first time than to retrain a problem dog. Here's a good puppy training tip. By putting your puppy on a feeding schedule he or she will go to the bathroom on a schedule, making house training much easier for you. There's an old training saying "What goes in on schedule, comes out on schedule." Get your puppy on a schedule immediately! Puppies are creatures of habit, and keeping to a schedule is important. The schedule should include things like hourly bath room visits, eating times, rest periods, walks, play time, training, and so on. Schedule your dog's lessons at the same time every day, and if possible, in the same place. Set aside time for 3 training sessions a day. It is important to keep the sessions short at the beginning. About 10 minutes. Talk to your dog in a quiet voice. No shouting and no punishments. Mild reprimands in a stern voice are all that should be needed to get the desired action. Here's another puppy training tip. When you start crate training a puppy keep a record of his meal times so that you will know when to schedule his potty breaks. The initial crate training sessions are rather short. About 10 minutes. Slowly increase it to 30 minutes. And when your puppy gets accustomed to his "private quarters" you can increase it up to 2 hours. The maximum should not exceed 3 or 4 hours. Training should be a fun time for you and your dog. You can begin basic training and socializing at eight weeks. When nour puppy reaches 14-16 weeks you cab begin a more advanced training routine. As you well know, dogs just love to play. So your task is to convert his love of playing into a fun training session. The most effective obedience training is gentle and supportive. There is no punishment. Give him tons of praise, and the occasional treat, and you'll turn him into a quick learner. If you keep the treats very small you can give him lots of them. And end each training period with an equal amount of play time. Unfortunately, eliminating problem behavior is one thing that dog owners may eventually face. Playing games like tug-of-war with the leash, or with a rope (which can look like a leash to the dog) can unwittingly encourage a behavior problem.
